Luhring Augustine is pleased to present a selection of recent and new work by both gallery and non-gallery artists for our first show of the new year. Among the highlights of the exhibition will be classic works by Robert Gober and Rachel Whiteread, a wall vitrine by Reinhard Mucha, a new falling book sculpture by Steve Wolfe, and one in the series of drunken lanterns by Martin Kippenberger. Janet Cardiff, currently showing at the Carnegie International, joins with George Bures Miller to create a multi-media theater, mixing sculpture, audio and video. This work was previewed at the Istanbul Biennial this past September. Tunga's piece, Exogenous Axis, captures the negative space created by the silhouettes of women. The show will also include a Felix Gonzales-Torres candy piece. Finally, Kendell Geers, also currently showing at the Carnegie International and the Bonn Millennium show, will premiere his work in New York, with a large video instanation in the second gallery.
Although this international group of sculptors may initially resist categorization, they similarly resolve certain universal sculptural issues by using or creating everyday objects to convey their ideas. The intent of the exhibition is meant to be as simple and direct as possible; that is, to present a group of powerful sculptures in a manner that allows optimal viewing within a context that is both informative and unusual. This group of work effectively illustrates the enormous sculptural range of the past ten years.
